Artemis: Our Journey to the Moon

The Artemis Program! Imagine we’re building a brand-new clubhouse, but instead of trees, it’s on the Moon! That’s kind of what the Artemis Program is doing.

What is the Artemis Program?

  • It’s NASA’s big plan to send astronauts back to the Moon, but this time, to stay longer!
  • “Artemis” is the name of the Greek goddess of the Moon, which is pretty cool.
  • They’re not just visiting; they want to build a space station near the Moon called Gateway, and eventually, a base on the Moon itself.

Why are we going back?

  • Practice for Mars: The Moon is like a nearby training ground. If we can learn to live and work on the Moon, we’ll be way better prepared to go to Mars.
  • Discover new things: The Moon might have water ice hidden in its shadows, and that’s super important. We can also learn a lot about the Moon’s history by studying its rocks.
  • Inspire the future: Just like when people first went to the Moon, the Artemis Program is meant to get kids excited about science and space.

What are some cool things they’re doing?

  • Powerful Rockets: They’re building a huge rocket called the Space Launch System (SLS) that can carry astronauts and supplies to the Moon.
  • New Spacesuits: The astronauts will wear new spacesuits that are more flexible and easier to move in.
  • Gateway Space Station: This will be like a little house orbiting the Moon, where astronauts can live and work.
  • Working with Friends: Lots of countries are working together on the Artemis Program, like a big team project!

What’s the big dream?

  • To have astronauts living and working on the Moon for long periods.
  • To use what we learn on the Moon to send humans to Mars.
  • To make space exploration a regular thing!

The Artemis Program is like a big adventure, and it’s happening right now! It’s all about exploring, discovering, and pushing the limits of what we can do in space.
